Morupule Colliery was established in 1973 to supply coal to Bamangwato Concession Limited (B.C.L.) Copper/Nickel mine and its adjacent coal fired power station established by the Botswana Power Corporation (B.P.C.).
The Morupule coalfield is located west of Palapye in the Eastern Botswana and straddles the main Palapye/Serowe road. The coalfield is immense and of good quality with overall reserves of over 5 billion tons. It contains four main seams. The lowest seam (No.1) is the thickest and most consistently developed and it is this seam that is currently being mined.
Coal was dispatched by rail to both operations located at Selibe-Phikwe, some 150km to the North East. The Colliery has subsequently expanded considerably with the commissioning of the Morupule Power Station and the Botswana Ash Operation.
A dry screening plant was installed in 1989 and the Colliery supplies graded coal to B.C.L. and many small industries
