Mascom was licensed in 1998 as one of the two companies to establish, maintain and operate a GSM Mobile network in this country. The Mascom network was launched five weeks after licensing, establishing a reputation of credibility and has been the market leader from then on. Mascom has established a formidable history in just over 13 years of operations in Botswana. 

Mascom promised to have the network on the air to coincide with the then US President Bill Clinton's visit to Botswana in 1998. This was achieved with relative ease to the amazement of everybody. Mascom has maintained this tradition ever since and has gone on to introduce GPRS/EDGE network coverage that spans 90% of the population, and lately 3G/HSDPA covering the city of Gaborone.
