The founder of Dangote Group is Alhaji Aliko Dangote, CON, The Group is a leading diversified conglomerate, which generates annual revenues in excess of USD 1 billion (year 2004) and over USD 2billion is projected from Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), Benue Cement Company (BCC) and Obajana Cement Plant (OCP). Great DiversityThe Group’s interests are diverse, the most significant of which are the manufacture of fast-moving consumer goods such as sugar, flour, salt and spaghetti / macaroni. Additionally, the Group has made huge investments in the Nigerian cement industry ranging from import terminals with bagging plants, polypropylene sack factory, several greenfield projects and some rehabilitation projects at Benue Cement Company Plc. Other interests include commercial real estate complexes and a fleet of over 1,500 trucks. Recent additions to the Group’s portfolio include the acquisition of oil blocks no 1 (9%) and no. 3 (10%) in the Nigeria / Sao-Tome Joint Development Zone in conjunction with Chevron Texaco and Exxon-Mobil (block 1). In the Nigeria deep water, the Group acquired 6% of an oil block with Statoil (Norway) and Petrobas (Brazil). Also,the Group, through one of its subsidiaries – Kura Holdings, has just acquired the Oshogbo Steel Rolling Company(OSRC).The Dangote BrandDangote Group has, during the last four years become a market leader in majority of its domestic operations and the Dangote name commands a substantial brand premium in the region. Quality and efficiencyThe Group has experienced a phenomenal growth, which is driven by the quality of its goods and services, focus on cost, leadership and efficiency of its human capital. From 1999, it has gone through a transformation process from a basically trading concern to a giant Manufacturing conglomerate employing over 12,000 employees. Current investment programs are in excess of USD 1 billion, a significant proportion of which is in two integrated cement plants with a total capacity of 8 million metric tonnes annually. The cement bagging terminals are in Lagos and Port Harcourt in Nigeria and Tema in Ghana. Main ObjectivesDangote Group is focusing on the essential needs of food, shelter and clothing. The current annual production capacities are:- Sugar (1.4 million metric tonnes refining annually)- Flour (1.4 million metric tonnes milling annually)- Salt (0.4 million tonnes refining annually)- Pasta (20 million cartons of 10 kg annually)- Cement import terminals (9 million with market share of 4.5 million metric tonnes annually)- Cement projects with a capacity of 8 million tonnes ResponsibilityDangote Group has established a philanthropic organisation named Dangote Foundation, which is dedicated to providing assistance to less-privileged Nigerians mainly in the development of Education, Health Care Facilities, Water Supply, Poverty Alleviation and Sports.
