At Independence in 1966 Botswana had 12kms of tarred road in the entire country. The country, roughly the size of France, had little infrastructure to mention, no power grid, no water, and was one of the 20 poorest countries in the world, with no future!
In the late 1960’s Botswana had 235 primary schools and only 5 secondary schools. Today nearly every village has a primary school, a clinic and access to running water.
Botswana has a vibrant, thriving economy based on free market principles, and is considered the richest non-oil producing country in Africa. Foreign exchange reserves are, in per capita terms, one of the highest in the world and are sufficient to pay for 26 months of imports. Economic growth can be ascribed to mineral and beef exports, tourism and donor aid. By value of diamonds, Botswana is the biggest producer in the world, with an annual output of over 17 million carats. The country currently boasts an A2/Prime 1 international credibility and credit worthiness rating which is the highest rating of any country in Africa. Moody’s Investor Services have upgraded their foreign currency outlook for 2007 from “stable” to “positive” reflecting continued strengthening of the country’s financial postion and improved prospects for economic diversification away from diamond mining.
The Republic of Botswana operates on the governing principle of Democracy and in this regard Botswana has had three changes of president since Independence in 1966. The same political party, the Botswana Democratic Party or BDP has been in power since Independence. Elections occur every 5 years with 10-15 parties vying for power.
Land in Botswana is either state owned, tribal land or freehold land. State land may be leased for a period of 30 to 99 years. Freehold land is available to non-citizens as well as citizens. Tribal land is only available to citizens.
