Mersen South Africa Pty. Ltd. formerly known as Carbone Lorraine Electrical Applications, an expert in power and signal transmission, has been working with leading manufacturers and users of rotating electrical machinery for many years. We are world leaders in the renewable energy sector demonstrating our commitment to the environment.

We are committed to continued development and benefit from employing a dynamic team of men and women who provide our customers with creative solutions to meet all of their requirements.

Mersen South Africa Pty. Ltd. has been one of the very first industry players to develop industrial applications of carbon and graphite, more than a hundred years ago. The first step was the development of brushes to supply power to electric motors, which make use of the graphite's electrical conductivity, self-lubrication, and resistance to high temperatures. Since then, a multitude of other applications have been regularly developed through the combination of several remarkable characteristics of this material.

Quasi-ceramic, it can withstand temperatures of several thousand degrees without deformation; moreover, it is a remarkable conductor of heat and electricity, it resists the effect of most corrosive agents, and enjoys the lubricating characteristics that are proper to its lamellar structure.

The majority of segments which have been developed correspond to worldwide markets, representing turnovers from a few hundreds of thousands to one billion euros. Such markets are very technical, and Carbone Lorraine's success therein is due to its profound knowledge of the application and, therefore, of the real conditions of use as well as of the client's needs and constrictions.

This knowledge of applications has often led to extending the range of materials proposed in a given segment, such as graphite blended with noble metals and with complex polymers for chemical engineering anticorrosion ; graphite blended with silicon carbide for components destined for use in the electronics industry; carbon/carbon composites with frit materials made of graphite powders, ceramics, and metals for high-energy applications or braking.

Thanks to its numerous characteristics, graphite - which has always been at the historic heart of the Group - also acts as an incubator for new and future-bound activities.
