In 1879, the United African Company was formed following the merger of four European companies trading up the River Niger: Alexander Miller Brothers & Company, Central African Trading Company Limited, West African Company Limited and James Pinnock. Uacn has demonstrated marked dynamism in it's over 108 years of operation in Nigeria. Its predecessors have included the Royal Niger Company and the African and Eastern Trading Corporation, which merged in 1929 to form the United African Company limited, a wholly owned Uniliver company. In March 1973, the name of the company was further changed to uac of Nigeria limited and to the present uac of Nigeria plc in 1991.The Foods Division was known as West African Cold Storage Company Limited between 1948 and 1973. Later in 1973, following the indigenization decree in Nigeria, Unilever divested out of uacn and it became a Nigerian company. Going down memory lane, in the1950's the business was concerned primarily with trading, by importing perishable Foods such as Ice cream, Frozen Meat, Fish, Butter, Vegetables and Fruits. The Foods Division was also in charge of storage and distribution of Planta Margarine for Lever Brothers.In 1961, the company moved out of trading and started on a small scale, Ice Cream manufacturing, Meat processing, production of Dog Food and Bacon. In 1967, the Foods Division stepped-up its production activities by packaging Luncheon Meat, Tomato Sauce, Vinegar and Black pudding. Fox Glacier mints were added in 1968.By 1974, the company took over the distribution of Ovaltine from Lipton. However until 1981, the company's activities were mainly trading. Though real manufacturing started in 1982, when the Business expanded its manufacturing portfolio to cater for the needs of the teeming population – the trade/consumers.Foods in 1989 was merged with Kingsway Fast Foods (an off-shoot of Kingsway Rendezvous, conceptualized in 1974), which was the restaurant arm of the former Kingsway Stores. Before the merger, a new restaurant concept, Mr. Bigg's, was introduced in August 1986 as a category under uac Foods.As a result of the merger, there was a need for expansion and this led to the movement of the factory from Ijora to Ojota complex.However in February 2001, Mr. Bigg's became a fully fledged division of its own, with the head office at Oregun. And it has today become the market leader in Fast Foods business.Moreso, on 1 st September 2006 uac Foods gave birth to uac Dairies formally known as Ice cream category of uac foods. uac Dairies is the producer of Supreme Ice cream, the leading brand of ice cream in Nigeria. The Kingsway Rendezvous model was finally phased out in November 1996.Currently, uac foods is one of the oldest Nigeria's Leading manufacturer and marketer of tasty and nourishing convenience foods operating a business policy that seeks to deliver superior value to its consumers. uac foods has two broad categories – Snacks and Food services. In its portfolio are leading brands such as Gala (which has been in existence over 47 years filling the snacking needs of every Nigerian Consumer), Funtime Cake, Funtime Coconut Chips and Snaps.
