Future of the Automotive Aftermarket Industry

As the automotive industry heads into the next step in our evolution we at Midas are gearing up to support you. Through a series of mechanisms which includes connected cars, workshop support through technical data and training we will be well placed to continue our journey with you.

The competition commission has published draft guidelines, which are planned to come into effect from the 1st July 2021,  that relate to the South African Automotive Aftermarket industry and the repair of vehicles under the original equipment manufacturers warranty and service plans.

The guidelines indicate that when purchasing a new vehicle that the consumer will be allowed to choose where they would like to purchase value-added products such as service and maintenance plans through independent approved service providers in the Automotive Aftermarket.

The authorized repair and servicing of vehicles will be allowed using both original parts from the manufacturer but also matching quality products provided by the Automotive Aftermarket “replacement parts”. This means that Authorised repairers will be able to purchase products from authorised parts suppliers or independent parts suppliers. Vehicle owners will be able to use any repair shop to perform work, during the warranty period, all the while retaining the warranty.

Vehicle manufacturers may not make warranties conditional on the repair and servicing of a motor vehicle within their network or the use of their own branded spare parts. Vehicle manufacturers are required to make available to authorized and independent repairers’ technical information and training required to service and repair motor vehicles.
