GM Punjabi & Co Ltd began in 1974 when Gopaldas Punjabi laid its foundation after moving to Mauritius from India in the mid-1950s. Originally focusing on locally procured textiles, Gopaldas opened his first shop, Bombay Store, in Vacoas. In 1980, Gopaldas’ sons, Padam and Pravin, joined the business, expanding into Indian garment imports and wholesaling. Padam spearheaded diversification, importing household items from Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, and creating the Mikachi brand for small home appliances. In 2008, Padam secured the agency for Hisense Electronics, competing with other top brands.
