Mulago Hospital is a National Referral, and Teaching Hospital with a bed capacity of 1500 beds. It provides specialist services in Surgery, Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Oncology, Radiology with computerised Tomography (CT scan), Intensive Care , Renal Dialysis, Dentistry and Oral Surgery, Orthopaedics including limb fitting, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Dermatology, Genital/Urinary (urology) medicine, Neurosurgery, Cardiology and Cardiothoracic surgery and Accident and Emergency among others. 

Founded in 1913, Mulago Hospital suffered a phase of decline posed by the Socio-Economic effects that resulted from the national political upheavals of the 1970s and 1980s. Since mid 1980s, Mulago has undergone a series of rahabilitation works, development of the Human Resource, procurement of equipment in the numerous service centres including the remodelling of Theatre Suite, installation of ICT, furniture and other medical systems aimed at improving service delivery. 
 
A Tele-Medicine Centre at Lower Mulago was recently installed through a Pan- African collaboration between the Indian Government and Government of Uganda. This facility has enhanced consultation support between Mulago Hospital specialists and their counterparts in India's high level health care Institutions. This eases the quality of patient care and enhances training of Health workers. Mulago Hospital offers state-of-art Private Patients as well as General low cost and free Services including emergency, outpatient and inpatient services. SERVICES OFFERED Mulago Hospital has an annual in-patient turnover in excess of 140,000 patients and attends to over 600,000 out-patients in the Assesment Centre, General out-patients clinics, and specialist clinics and in Accident and Emergency Department annually. 
 
The hospital delivers over 30,000 mothers per year. KEY HOSPITAL DEPARTMENTS 
Accident and Emergency Located on the 3rd floor at the front of the hospital, the department commonly referred to as Casuality receives an average of 48,000 patients per year. 
 
The department is divided into medical surgical Emergency areas with corresponding wards (3BE) where emergencies are taken care of in the first 24 hours before being discharged or transferred to specialised medical and surgical wards. 
 
The department is equipped with an emergency theatre, x-ray facilities, a resuscitation room, a pharmacy, and an emergency laboratory. Senior supervision is available on 24-hour basis and daily review clinics are held. 
 
Anaesthesia 
This is one of the important service departments, providing routine and emergency anaesthesia for all surgical and Obstetrics patients 
 
Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology 
A well established department with three fully fedged maternity and gynaecological facilities in upper Mulago(ward 14), Lower Mulago (5th floor) and in the private patients Wing (ward 6D&E). The department delivers over 30,000 mothers each year. It has its own dedicated theatre on the 5th floor while Private Patients are handled in the Private Patients Theatre. 
 
A voluntary surgical contraceptive Theatre exists in Upper Mulago where the Family Planning clinic is also located. 
 
Department of Surgery 
The department provides general traumatic and emergency surgery. The department offers speciality surgery in Orthopaedics, ENT, Urology Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Colonic, and Rectal Surgery , Gallbladder, Billiary and Pancreatic surgery, Gastro Intestinal endoscopy, varicose veins, and paediatric surgery. 
 
Department of Internal Medicine 
The department encompasses general and internal medicine including T.B and other infectious diseases, Oncology and HIV/AIDS. Within the umbrella of this department is a haemodialysis unit which is available for emergencies and is located on 6th floor. 
 
Department of Paediatrics and Child Health 
With specialist clinics in sickle cell Anaemia, infectious diseases, Diarrhoea, cerebral palsy and a special Care Unit for neonates. The department runs the Accute Care Unit, which on a daily basis admits between 50-80 very ill children as emergencies. 
 
Laboratory Department 
The department provides all basic Haematology, Bacteriology, Biochemistry, blood transfusion and Histopathology services. An extremely busy laboratory provides around the clock services. 
 
Pharmacy Department 
Provides pharmceutical services to both general and private out-patients and in-patients. The department also runs a manufacturing unit for intravenous fluids. 
 
Physiotherapy Department 
A busy department offering a comprehensive physiotherapy service to out-patients and in-patients on the wards. The hospital has also a fully-fledged 
 
Occupational Therapy Unit Radiology Department 
A consultant led department offering among their various services computerised tomography or CT scan, Ultra sound Scan and Fluoroscopy. 
 
Radiotherapy Department 
The department was opened in 1988 and expanded between 1991-1995. A new Chines Cobalt machine was installed. 
 
Nuclear Medicine Department 
The unit provides Diagnostic and therapeutics services using radio nuclides and radio pharmaceuticals. Diagnostics include; thyroid diseases, kidneys, brain heart, bones, liver, cancer and infections. Therapeutics currently offered rate for thyroid cancers and some thyroid disorders. 
 
Support Services 
This includes units like Planning, finance Human resource, ICT, HMIS, Public Relations, Procurement, Engineering, Supplies, Catering and Domestic Services among others.
