The Royal Mara is located in the Mara North Conservancy of the Masai Mara, on a peninsula in the popular "Hippo Bend Lagoon" section of the Mara River. The lodge is within proximity of the world famous migration river crossing points of "Koyiaki-Kichwa" and "Mara Serena" as well as the leopard hangout at Leopard Gorge, highlighted on the BBC Big Cat Diary program. We are located on the migration route where, during the migration season of July to November, thousands of wildebeest converge on the camp periphery to graze.
From January to April when the grasses are tall in the National Reserve area, most of the herbivores and lions of the Reserve migrate to the Mara North Conservancy area of the Royal Mara due to its shorter grasses, thereby making game drives near us the preference for most camps of the eastern Masai Mara. The camp marsh, resident hippo pools, lagoon and waterhole make game viewing inside the Royal Mara site, in combination with game drives, an unforgettable safari experience. Most of our guests are rewarded with views of all of the Big Five buffalo, lion, elephant, leopard and rhino. Transportation: For maximum comfort it is recommended that guests access us by air. Roundtrip airfare charges between Nairobi's Wilson Airport and the Masai Mara cost upwards of $300 depending on the season and not including taxes. Air transport to the Masai Mara is available twice daily from Nairobi's Wilson Airport via scheduled forty minute to one hour flights on air charter companies such as SafariLink, Air Kenya or Fly540 to the nearest local airstrip near the Royal Mara.
The preferred airstrip is Mara North airstrip (10 min from the camp). Airstrip transfers between Mara North airstrip and Royal Mara are complimentary. Coastal flights are also available between the Masai Mara and coastal destinations such as Diani Beach, Mombasa, Malindi and Lamu.
Connecting flights to Zanzibar are also available, but passengers will first need to make a connecting flight out of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (Nairobi), Wilson Airport (Nairobi), or Mombasa. When you make your booking we suggest we also arrange your air transport so that we may coordinate flights with other guests.
For guests requiring assistance, we can arrange for transfers (at a supplementary cost) from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Nairobi's Wilson Airport, about a thirty minute drive away. The camp may also be reached via a six hour drive from Nairobi which may prove bumpy. We can also assist you with land transportation and/or needed Nairobi hotel bookings.
