Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company Limited Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company (KIWASCO) was founded in 2001 and registered under CAP 46 of the Laws of Kenya as a subsidiary company of the Municipal Council of Kisumu. It began its operations on 1st July 2003 KIWASCO was established through the reforms that took place in the water sector nationally and based on the decision to privatise essential services. It was established throught the transformation of what used to be the water and sewerage department of the Municipal Council of Kisumu. Its core objective is to make the water and sewerage services provision a commercial activity that generates sufficient revenue to sustain operations.
The history of Kisumu can be traced back to early 1901, then known as Port Florence. Today Kisumu is popularly referred to as the lakeside city because of its strategic proximity to the Lake Victoria, the second largest Fresh water lake in the world. It is Kenya's third largest city with a population of around 520,000 people and is situated on the north tip of Winam gulf, which in itself is part of Kavirondo Gulf of Lake Victoria.
Kisumu was the major port of Lake Victoria during the commonwealth of East Africa, and prior to the break-up of the East African Community, it was a transportation center with a railroad line from Mombasa and the water routes of Lake Victoria, and also a military and administrative center.
